Pollinators and tomatoes πŸ…

On Wednesday, May 24, we planted seedlings of several pollinator plants along the pollinator border. They include guara, hollyhock, and clary sage plants.

The poached egg plants (Limnanthes douglasii), are blooming beautifully at the edges of our vegetable beds. They’re also great pollinator plants!

We planted many, MANY types of tomato seedlings, including the cherry and beefsteak varieties.

We are preparing to set up the irrigation system soon so we prepared the beds and laid out the irrigation lines. Prepping and loosening the beds was a lot of hard work since the soil was tough and clumped together after having gone through the winter cold.

The Canadice grapevine is now growing rapidly and for the first time, has flowers on it!

This Sunday we had a positive throng of volunteers, swelled by some half a dozen UBC students wanting to learn about gardening.

We filled up the compost bin with spent forget-me-nots and other plant matter from the remaining beds for future planting.

This should boost the compost’s current temperature of 25˚C!

Clearing the beds

Alex had brought several trays of lettuce and brassica seedlings, most of which were planted out. The vertical garden was replenished with fresh potting compost, ready for planting.

At the end of the work party, the drip irrigation system was checked out to see if it was working properly and to detect any leaks.

Our next guided work party is tomorrow at 11am! Sign up for a shift here.
